A Momentary Decision Led to Criminal Charges for This Michigan Mom
Parenting isn’t easy. Sometimes, in the rush of everyday life, even good parents make impulsive decisions that seem minor in the moment but carry serious consequences. That may have been the case for a young mother in Warren, Michigan, whose spur-of-the-moment stop for a spa treatment led to criminal charges and CPS involvement.
A Quick Trip Becomes a Legal Nightmare
In 2019, 23-year-old Ericka Campbell had her 11-year-old sister and two young children, ages 3 and 1, in the car with her when she stopped at a private home in Warren that was operating as an unlicensed spa. Campbell told the children she would be right back and went inside to get a cosmetic treatment.
However, as time passed and temperatures dropped, the 11-year-old sister grew worried. After waiting an hour—with no word from Campbell and growing concern for the toddlers—she made a decision that would change everything: she called the police.
Police Intervention and Arrest
When Warren Police officers arrived at the scene, the homeowner told them Campbell was inside receiving a spa service from his wife. Officers asked the homeowner to tell her to come outside. When Campbell refused—reportedly stating she wanted to finish having her eyebrows done—an officer entered the home and removed her from the treatment table.
Campbell was arrested on the spot.
Child Abuse Charges Filed
After contacting Child Protective Services, officers arranged for the children to be picked up by their grandmother. Meanwhile, Campbell was transported to the Macomb County Jail and charged with child abuse.
According to reports, Campbell had left the 11-year-old with a cell phone and car keys, believing the older child could contact her or come knock if something went wrong. She later said she didn’t expect the appointment to take so long, and that she was very sorry for what happened.
When a Single Parenting Decision Has Legal Consequences
This case is a powerful reminder of how quick, everyday decisions can lead to life-changing criminal charges. In Michigan, leaving a child unattended in a vehicle—especially in poor weather or for an extended period—can result in serious child abuse or neglect allegations, regardless of your intentions.
Even when the child is left with a phone, or the parent believes the situation is safe, the law often takes a zero-tolerance approach. And once CPS or police get involved, the outcome can include:
- Criminal prosecution
- CPS investigations and monitoring
- Temporary loss of custody or parenting time
- Damage to your reputation and future employment
