Alexandra Alexi, a 23-year-old resident of Lansing, is facing a number of very serious felony charges. Police say it was child abuse that lead to the death of her two-month-old baby boy in September of 2014.

 
According to police records, Police and paramedics responded to an emergency call from an apartment. Alexi and her boyfriend were attempting to administer CPR to an unresponsive infant whose heart was not beating.

 
The baby, Julian Alexi, was rushed to Sparrow Hospital. Medical staff determined that he had sustained head injuries, including a possible skull fracture, along with blood in his lungs and hemorrhages in both eyes. In addition, it was determined that the baby had eight broken ribs that were several weeks old.

 
Little Julian died nine days later, by which time an investigation had already begun into what was assumed to be a child abuse case. However, the death of the baby changed matters somewhat, and the prosecution added murder to the list of crimes.

 
According to documentation from the Ingham County family court, Alexi and her boyfriend (who is not the boy’s biological father), were the only people present with the baby both on the day before and the day of his hospitalization. Alexi also allegedly gave a number of contradictory stories to the police regarding how her son’s injuries occurred.

 
Alexi was arrested on charges of open murder, torture, and first and third degree child abuse. She was arraigned in the 54A District Court, where the magistrate set her bail at $200,000 cash bond. She has apparently requested a court-appointed attorney.  Her preliminary hearing on these very serious charges has been scheduled for April 9th.

 
Under Michigan law, open murder can be either first or second degree murder, depending on what the jury decides is most appropriate. First degree murder is punishable by life in prison without the possibility of parole, while second degree murder can be any number of years up to life with parole as a possible option. Torture and first degree child abuse are also felonies punishable by up to life in prison, while second degree child abuse is punishable by up to ten years in prison.

 
There is currently no information available as to whether or not the boyfriend, whose name has not been released, will be charged with any crimes.
