Welcome back and thanks for joining us. We’ve been looking at the consequences of making false allegations of child abuse, and looking at a current case here in Michigan that deals with that exact scenario. As we mentioned in the previous article, Terry Starr, the former principal of Cherryland Middle School in Elk Rapids, is accused of sending anonymous letters to other members of staff in the school district claiming that a former principal has a sexual relationship with one of his students. But is it true?
A lot of people’s lives are impacted by abuse allegations!
When someone is accused of abusing a child, whether it’s physical, psychological, or sexual abuse, the law required that an investigation be made. Either CPS of the police will follow up, and that means digging into someone’s personal life, asking invasive questions, and following up with other people who know them. And that means the investigation isn’t a secret. So if someone accuses you of child abuse, it won’t be long before that information is made public. Think about it… what happens when everyone knows you’ve been accused of abusing or neglecting a child?
The fallout from a child abuse investigation can be catastrophic!
As soon as the information is made public, even in a small way, it spreads like wildfire. Now everyone knows. Your friends and neighbors. The parents of your children’s friends at school. Your clients and coworkers. And if the case gets big enough, or charges are filed, then the media gets involved. Now your face is plastered on newspapers and media sites. People who’ve never met you feel compelled to comment online about you. They don’t have all (or any of) the facts, but they make assumptions. Your business can fail. You can lose your job, and even your professional license. Your relationships are impacted. In short, your life goes up in flames.
Please be careful when reporting suspected child abuse!
If you are genuinely concerned about a child’s safety or welfare, then we encourage you to make a report to the correct authorities. But if you’re not sure, or you’ve heard a rumor but haven’t any evidence to substantiate it, then don’t risk damaging someone’s entire life. And NEVER report someone for child abuse to get revenge, or because you’re angry! You can’t imagine the personal devastation, and the criminal charges you could end up facing if you’re discovered are never worth it!
